ASEPTIC DEMAND SCALE FOR VARIOUS FERMENTATIONS

There are many types of fermentation process carried out in bioreactors or fermentors. These fermentation process ranged from bioloogical wastewater treatment, to food fermentation and even to the production of pharmaceuticals and vaccines.

In analyzing the various fermentation process we see the application of:
1 Varying size of bioreactors
2 Close to open bioreactors
3 Pure cultures to mixed cultures used in the process
4 Different levels of aseptic integrity for the fermentors

The products produced by the various fermentation processes could vary from high volume to low value products to low volume and high value products

If we draw a simple linear scale of the various fermentation industries we can see that at the bottom are those industries which produce high volume low value products such as anaerobic digesters, to food fermentation. At the other end of the scale are low volume and high value products as shown by vaccines and other pharmaceutical fermentation.

Looking closer we see that the high volume low value products usually involves mixed cultures and low aseptic integrity requirements. While at the other end of the scale requires pure culture and very high aseptic integrity requirements
